I went on my first-ever MRD trip yesterday. We traveled to Chesapeake, VA to be the exhibition band at a USSBA competition for high school bands. I had a really great time and got to know a few people better over the course of the trip, which was nice.
Charter buses are fun… I ended up right up front with some of my section – fortunately, the ones I like – and got a little bit of studying done for my GPhil midterm. We got the DVD player working (finally) about halfway there and popped in Zoolander, which was funny as always. It made the four-hour trip go by much faster.
The performances were way fun and I actually enjoyed them much more than I have the ones back at Bridgeforth. I’m not really sure why. Perhaps it’s because Scott told us that some bands came just to see us – i.e. they didn’t perform at all, and traveled quite a distance to see the MRDs. That was cool in itself. Plus, the high school crowds are just so… in awe of college bands. I remember getting all excited when Tech performed at a competition a few years ago. Get It On was a big hit, and I think it was a really sweet way to end our show – I told Scott and he seemed to agree, even if he doesn’t quite know who I am.
We went to the mall and got dinner, then wasted an hour or so just walking around being slightly annoying and having fun. It was nice hanging out with different people than usual… nothing against my one group of JMU band friends, but I’m still trying to meet new people and all.
We performed again after dinner (at 10:30) and then headed for home. I walked in my door at 3:35 AM this morning. I slept till 11, had lunch with Megan (hooray!), and went on a Target run. Time to keep studying for my GPhil midterm. Ugh. I don’t wanna…
