Coming home for break was none other than challenging. I was so excited to finally be done with the first semester of college, and to be getting through finals without a ton of bad news grade-wise. I found out the day before my last two finals that someone very special to my friends and I had passed away. Megan had been fighting cancer for roughly three years. She always had a smile, regardless of her condition. Failure was not an option for her. Unfortunately, it was the only option left for her body after such tremendous efforts for so long. …

I returned my baritone to Eagle this evening. The scene was familiar to anyone who’s been in marching band before: section leaders standing around, keeping things in check; a slow but steady accumulation of all of the gear that makes the season work.Not having an instrument in my room is so liberating. It feels like the last bit of high school has finally been let go. Not that it was a bad thing, per se. It’s just that I’ve become accustomed to being “the band kid” and hanging out with “the band kids” – is that bad? Not really. …
