My parents and I spent Sunday moving my worldly possessions out of my apartment. The lease on the apartment ends in a week or so, and the plan was to get all my junk in a storage unit until I move in to Pheasant Run in August.
The storage place was awesome. Mini-Stor-It has a sizable chunk of the JMU community’s storage covered, and I can see why. We got a climate-controlled unit, 5×15′, for $112. Then… we picked up the U-Haul.

“The Beast” – aka my beater of a U-Haul
The local U-Haul joint knew we were looking for a cargo van. Trouble is, they didn’t have any available for rent. So, we were ‘upgraded’ to a 14′ box van. Upgrade is an over-statement. It was an early-90s model GMC truck with 194,000 miles. The suspension was shot. The steering had a ton of play. One headlight was out (aka, illegal). The radio had a single functioning speaker, and would turn off if I upped the volume too quickly. To top it off, I learned that “Off” for the wipers was just a suggestion. They had a mind of their own and would quit when they were damn ready… conveniently in the middle of the windshield.

The size of the truck was great – fourteen feet deep was larger than we needed. As a result, some items shifted during my flight. Nothing broke, though, thanks to my excellent packing skillz.
As always, we had to re-fill the truck’s fuel tank when we returned it. She took 2.5 gallons of 87, which was surprising, considering our travels comprised 10 or 15 miles at best. I guess six miles per gallon is good for a 7.3L V8.
Can’t wait to do this all over again in August… fortunately, the end result should be a great year!
