Jeff’s E34: The Busted Pile, Part One

Monday, January 18th, 2010

I met this guy Jeff during orientation week, back in August. I was an orientation guide and he’s an RA in my students’ dorm. We had some time to chat during the week, and it came up in conversation that he had a BMW. Of course, this set off my car interests, and we established that it was a 1995 525iA.

Nothing more was said, and Jeff and I didn’t see each other except a quick “hey” in passing, if we ever saw each other around campus. I ran into him right before Thanksgiving break, and he mentioned that the car …

How Not To Act in Public, Part II

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

So, the holidays are (technically) over by now. It’s December 26, the day after Christmas, and retail was booming all day. I wrote an earlier post (way long time ago, click here) about how to act in public. Consider this post a follow-up, social behavior training for the masses.

Step 1: Approaching Employees
When you enter a retail store, you are typically “browsing” or “need help.” Should you fall into the latter category, clearly you need to speak with an employee. They can generally be identified by say, bright red shirts and name tags. Should you need clarification, …

East Campus, Raves, and Viral Social Media

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

This past Sunday evening, I took part in one of the coolest things that’s happened in my time at JMU. Nate casually mentioned this “ECL rave” at Sarah’s party, and proceeded to invite us all on Facebook. The rave was modeled after a “flash mob” type of event at the University of North Carolina last year. UNC had about 3,000 people in attendance, and the goal was supposedly to break the 3k mark.

Ben did some research and figured out that our East Campus Library at JMU is one-fourth the size of the UNC library. Clearly, 3,000 people wouldn’t fit. Regardless, …

Finals and the Final Weekend

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

It’s Saturday, almost 6 in the evening. I’m leaving in about an hour to go “ice fishing” with the MM guys. My poor car. I beat on it, especially in the snow. Fortunately it’s never left me stranded somewhere. Major knock on wood here.

I finished out my last week of classes yesterday, came home and opened up my eMate that came in the mail. I’m hoping to use it in the spring for note-taking; having the internet at my disposal in class is too distracting and I end up missing large chunks of whatever’s being said. I have all of …

Good Things Are Happening

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

It’s just taking a while to get to said good things. Of note:

My MacBook Pro continued to act like a stubborn 3-year-old, even after my good friend Beth at F.O. replaced the Bluetooth card. It still refused to go to sleep, the optical drive pouting in protest whenever I prodded at the Apple menu. Lori at AppleCare is my new friend. I called her and left a message in frustration. She called me back the next day and said, “well, there’s not much left to replace. I think the best option is a new computer.”

So, my “old” laptop is en …

Road Trippin’ It, Maybe?

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Chris randomly blurted out the other day, something like, “we should take a road trip!”

So, what do I do? Agree, naturally. We’re thinking of going right after finals – December 12th would be the first day we could get out of Harrisonburg, assuming we have exams that Friday. If this whole plan actually works, the big question is where to go.

I had an abundance of free time tonight – really, no homework, score – so I started thinking and Google Mapping. I’ve never been on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and have heard that it’s really a nice road to drive. …

Neither Space Nor Time

Monday, October 19th, 2009

The TV is on, set to ESPN. They’re showing some football game that I don’t care for, but the remote is a good six feet away, and I can’t be bothered to retrieve it and change the channel.

My hellacious week of projects and papers is finally over. I turned in my seven (eight, barely) page paper this morning, and now I’m in the clear for at least a few days. Quite the nice feeling.

I went with Ben and Sarah to dinner tonight. We did some work in Harrison post-nachos, and I started looking up classes for the spring semester, as …

Two Years Ago

Monday, October 19th, 2009

I just spent the better part of an hour reading through my old blog posts. I had to code the “Archive” PHP file, and that led to testing, which led to reading, and then I couldn’t stop.

Man, have things changed in two years. I feel like I’ve figured out who my friends should be and I have my “in crowd” now. I’m still close with my MRD friends, but we’re all making friends with similar interests and talents at this point.

And holy crap, look at my involvement with Madison Motorsports. I went from the freshman-who-went-go-karting to being a leader of …

Random Thoughts From People My Age

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Found on the interwebs, I take no credit… but they’re all so true!

1. I wish Google Maps had an “Avoid Ghetto” routing option.

2. More often than not, when someone is telling me a story all I can think about is that I can’t wait for them to finish so that I can tell my own story that’s not only better, but also more directly involves me.

3. Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you’re wrong.

4. I don’t understand the purpose of the line, “I don’t need to drink to have fun.” Great, no one does. …
